I've been having trouble getting internet access through an ethernet connection since doing a fresh install of windows XP.
It appears that I'm missing the driver for the ethernet controller.
Looking in 'device manager' under the network adapters section there's an apparently working '1394 Net Adaptor' but under unknown devices there's the question-marked ethernet controller, which I believe is what I want the driver for.
Hi guys, Today, I installed XP SP3 and other drivers, including Realtek AC'97 audio drivers and other drivers. But the device manager shows missing ethernet controller (in fact, it shows a yellow exclamation mark in teh entire other devices section). Where do i find a Ethernet Driver for windows xp sp3. Ethernet Controller Driver Win Xp Sp3 Download
I found an old cd that contains the driver for it (Realtek 8139 or some 81xx). There's no setup tool, but only 3 files (a .cat file, .inf file and .sys file).
Free Win Xp Sp3
I've tried right-clicking on the .inf file and using 'install' and also tried just copying the .sys file into the system32/drivers folder but neither have got me anywhere after restarting. The ethernet controller is still listed in 'unknown devices'.
EDIT: I've also tried updating the driver in the device manager, pointing it at the folder containing the driver, but this hasn't worked either.
Any ideas?
Thanks

In the device manager you should open the properties of this ethernet adapter with question mark and on a driver tab click a button
Update driver . Then you should point the location where to search for a driver.

This downloaded fast and installed quickly and smoothly. The installation interface said that this installed successfully. But it hadn't. There was no request for a reboot after install. I checked control panel and the driver installation for ethernet controller (this is the driver that usually handles that) did not show up as if anything had happened at all. So I rebooted manually, just in case. Still nothing. I checked my settings in my systems BIOS also, pertaining to the ethernet controller, and everything appeared to be as it should. Mysteriously though, after two subsequent reboots,(and un- & re-installs) installing this still fails to appear - In the 'Ethernet Controller Properties' dialogue box 'General' tab info reads: 'The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)'

1. Did not work on a computer which the title of this download identifies as the RTL series in which it is supposed to apply to.
2. Despite a great looking installation interface, there was no indication whatsoever in the way of an alert dialogue box or similar that any POTENTIAL issue(s) could cause installation conflict problems, etc.etc.. 3. The ADD/REMOVE Programs area of Control Panel shows the installation of this download package (which I went ahead and 'removed' since it wasn't doing anything PRODUCTIVE, just occupying space, and being useless CLUTTER) but this same specific device's package installation in CONTROL PANEL's Device Manager failed to even show up as if it were never installed. Ur guess is as good as mine how/why that happened - but it did...
